88 firebird cooling fan wont work
88 firebird cooling fan wont work
305 tbi single fan. Used to run all the time as soon as I turned key to on. Kept the temp at the big line between 100 and 220 now the fan doesn't turn on. Replaced fan still nothing. Temp rises to 220 with no fan on still. Any ideas?

I guess I would have looked into it when it ran all the time. Lets start with the temp sensor (on the passenfer side head by the manifolds), Also check your fan relay. These are the most likely culprits
Re: 88 firebird cooling fan wont work
Thanks for the reply. It running all the time didn't bother me. What would cause it not to run now though? If its running on a 12v signal and turns on as soon as the car goes into on it should still run now. Thing it would only be a switch or relay if it was wired right in the first place. Need this fixed though its my only car
Re: 88 firebird cooling fan wont work
how can i get the fan to work as a temp fix? can i wire the power wire to the ignition fuse and just ground the other wire so the fan is on whenever the car is?

A fan draws alot of amps - there's no simple 5-minute fix - straight wiring a fan to run always is an electrical fire waiting to happen.
If I were you, and since the fan has already been rigged by someone else and you have no clue what/how that's been done, I'd invest in a seperate fan controller, and spend 45 minutes wiring it in. They probe the radiator, most come with all necessary parts/wires, and they don't use any of the stock stuff (so you don't have to worry about how the fan was wired before). They come with good instructions - usually just need a crimper to crimp the wires connections. Available on the shelf at Autozone/Advance/whatever, about $40 or so. Much nicer models (like Flex-a-lite) available at Summit at higher prices - but you'll have to wait for shipping.

the quick fix i always do when i my vehicles have this problem and my bird did Saturday, is wire the positive to a switch and back to the batterie then ground out the negative and just remember to turn the fan on and off when u need it i have done this to several vehicles. u could do it as a temporary fix till u figure out the real issue.

You didn't mind the fan running all the time, but maybe the motor did and burnt itself out. You can test if the motor is o.k. by by jumping 12V to the fan motor. Make sure you use heavy wire to do this test.

Re: 88 firebird cooling fan wont work
test the fan but throwing hot form the bat to the fan then check the relay on my car i have 2 fans and that meant 2 relays one fan would be on all the time the other came on as needed. one relay works one and the other one the other except in my case i had a temp fix with i set both on the same relay which was the always on circuit so i would grab a fan relay at autozone they are cheap try it in place of each relay swap them back and fourth

Re: 88 firebird cooling fan wont work
Looks like the fan didnt have a good ground. Shorted out and fried the relay, replaced relay and it still wouldnt kick on. i can get it to kick on by giving it 12v from the battery or by bypassing the relay all together. think its the fan switch. just made a new ground for it and bypassed the switch for now, will grab a aftermarket fan controller when i can probably will be a few months.
Re: 88 firebird cooling fan wont work
What is a TFS? My fan isnt working either. The motor went bad and fried the relay and when i replaced the relay and gave the fan power again the motor seized completely. I think once that happened it fried the new relay also but i havent checked it yet. I want to check the TFS to rule it out but im not sure what it is. Are you referring to the temp sensor on top or is it something else?
Re: 88 firebird cooling fan wont work
I have power and ground at the relay, both sides of the fuse are working. I have power at the electrical connector for the fan and at the connector for the ECT sensor but no ground at either. i cant even jump the fan to get it to start. Any tips on where to fault trace the wires? or where i can find a good wiring diagram? i just want to fix what i have for as cheap as i can. this is my daily driver and traffic in northern va is brutal.

I'd wager Temperature Fan Switch. Though, it's more commonly referred to as just FS or, fan switch.
