Antifreeze ?

So I have done some research on line and searched our site extensively with mixed results. I'm going to flush the car and wanted to know what is the best antifreeze for our cars? The only one that really has been mentioned by name is Prestone (green)with ethylene glycol. Is this the best one or do you have other suggestions?
Please be specific on brand and what to look for as ingredients if possible.
Thanks

Re: Antifreeze ?

I use Peak plain old green style, because it was cheap. I put a bottle of water wetter in it.

Re: Antifreeze ?

Ethylene Glycol is all the same, no sense spending cash on some brand - I use store brands, never had any issues. 50/50 mix, and I too run a bottle of water wetter for added piece of mind.

Re: Antifreeze ?

One more question, is the "max life" or "extended life" formulas any good or should I go with the regular mix ?

Re: Antifreeze ?

from my experience buying the cheapest decent 50/50 you can find and changing it often beats the pants off of buying the expensive stuff and just forgetting about it

that's the key with anything involving water, keeping it fresh

Re: Antifreeze ?

you dont have to mix it 50/50 either. i have and always will mix it 70% distilled water, and the rest antifreeze with one bottle of either water wetter or purple ice. water will always be the best coolant. all that antifreeze is used for is to raise the boiling point of water and lower the temp at which it freezes.

Re: Antifreeze ?

Distilled water also greatly reduces rust and clogging of the aluminum radiator core since there are no minerals or other contaminents. Ethylene Glycol is supposed to be the best and will raise the boiling point but pure water with two bottles of purple ice or water wetter will actually cool the engine better except for the boiling point issue and lubricating properties. Hot Rod TV did the pepsi challenge with two bottles of purple ice and it lowered the temp of a stock older ford truck (70s) about 15 degrees. They say it is best to run a 50/50 ratio of antifreez and water but purple ice works best with water only. We could all go back to using alcohol as antifreez like they did in the model Ts back in the day.
