EBL COOLING FAN NOT WORKING

Hi, Sorry if this is not in the correct thread for this article, but seemed to fit the type of problem im having and also another thread that people may be looking in for the same answer. So, Im pretty new to the EBL Flash and have a couple of problems ive been working around. First was EBL not entering closed loop, until Rbob looked at the .bin I was using and informed me it was an open loop tune...problem resolved.

The new problem arose when i went to wire up my electric fans to my EBL....Waited for it to run up to operating temps, and for the EBL to engage the FAN control.........EBL saying that the FAN is running...but NO FAN????

I did not use the recomended fan relay which may explain the fan not turning on, I have looked in my area for this relay that @dynamicefi.com wiring diagram recomends....with no luck without a week or two delay so i have one on order to check if its a problem.

I guess my question is....Can it be the relay that im using, the .bin file may not let the EBL to enable the fan, or did i just mess up wiring the relay???????

I just need this thing to run my fan and i feel comfortable driving it to work and back daily (its my daily driver for the winter, stupid Minnesota BS winters coming soon) i really need some help on this one guys...Ill post my .bin im currently tuning and the datalogs if someone can look at them and determine if somethings WAY wrong or I just have an electrical fault. Dont mind the tune at this point, I know i have long way to go just lookin for the fan prob at this point to make it drivable so i can begin TT-1 Datalogs.

Thanks Guys...Best site by far for FAQ Third gen type Q&A material.

Re: EBL COOLING FAN NOT WORKING

There isn't a great reason why a standard relay wouldn't work

I don't know EBL but, I know it's just tacked on a standard ECM. A OE ecm will control fan output with ground.

RBob asked you to ground the ECM output C2 (which would be tied to your relay), KOEO (key on, engine off) to see if the fan kicks on.

If it doesn't you wired it wring.

85, 86 should be keyed iginition +12v and ground (ECM controlled) on a standard relay.

30 is your battery +12v in, and 87 is your switched, out to fan, contact. 87a is not used in this application.

You can also check your ECM ground for continuity when it is supposed to be grounding the relay for fan on.

A TBI ECM never controlled a fan to begin with so, it would have to be wired in, too. A tie in to the fan switch ground would seem to be the most simple way. JMO though...

I havent tried grounding of pin C2 yet to confirm a wiring issue, was busy welding in a bung for my TT-1 i got a couple days ago.....another amazing product that Rbob has brought us. and finishing up the wiring for it. Got it all installed and running with no problems, easy install.

By the way just wondering, if grounding pin C2 does not solve the problem(i have switched 85 and 86 pins on the standard SPDT relay and still no fan) would that mean that the EBL may not be grounding the circuit and sending the signal to the relay? would this mean that i could have mis-soilderd a connection or something??

Just a couple things ive been thinking about for a not so simple repair if it ends up being that,im sure its a bad connection or a very stupid and simple mistake i made, Ill try grounding the C2 Pin and get back to the thread with the results

Thanks guys, would be pretty lost right now without some expert opinions and facts, thanks for all the input.

The coil in the relay isn't polarity sensitive, it just needs power to energize and latch the contact.

If grounding the relay (C2, same thing, just a matter of where you're grounding the relay) doesn't kick the fan, it means there is a circuit issue. By grounding at C2 at the ECM, it just verifies that the wire from ECM to relay is good. If that fails, and a ground directly at the relay does make it close, there is a problem with the wire to the ECM C2.

If the relay doesn't close (start the fan) by grounding, it could also be a +12v issue as well if you know the C2 wire to the relay is good. Key on is only for the purpose of powering the relay as the fan relays are generally powered from the ignition switch in the on/run position.
