Today I stopped at Summit and bought a hypertech fan switch. It is supposed to cut the fan on at 200 and turn off at 185. I got to thinking that I have a 192 thermostat. Should I change the thermostat to 185? The car runs real cool going down the road. It just heats up sitting in traffic and that is normal. I've had the car hit that 240 mark and the fan kick on only twice. You can tell when the thermostat opens up and the temp stops rising as fast and goes up slow untill the fan kicks on then holds at that 240 mark. I have to check the other fan but will do that when I get the a/c recharged, right now it does not come on cause the compressor will not kick on cause it is low on freon.

 

As long as it's holding and doesn't move above the 240* you should be good, however it should hover in the 200-220* mark when cruising down the road.

Our cars are designed to run "hot", it was a design to help with emissoins. 210* was the normal operating temp. The factory thermostat opens at 190*. The factory fan turns on at 225*. If you have the hypertech swtich, that will drop it to 200 and off at 185. To keep that ratio, I would put a 180* t-stat in it. Also, I would rust the new switch over the 25year old temp gauge for accuracy when the fans turn on. Mine reads 20-30* hotter than what it is based on when my JET switch turns the fans on.

Lastly, no matter what the gauge says, it's not overheating until it's boiling out of the overflow.

 

I've read about the stock gauges. No boiling over, car does fine. I just wanted the fans to kick in sooner. I'll change out the thermostat. Why could'nt they have made that simple?
