a/c not working

Hey guys

I have an 87 GTA and the a/c is not working - the blower is functional as I've turned the fan on high and it blows out air when I push on the max a/c and go to the compressor it does not engage, is there a test to verify if the compressor will engage.
if there is such a test for the compressor and the compressor engages what would that indicate and what would it indicate if the compressor doesn't engage. Any help would be appreciated. I've had the vehicle for three years and never tried the ac. If the issue is freon r12 any ideas on where I could purchase some has it is not available in Canada

Thanks

Re: a/c not working

you can test the compressor bye jumping the a/c pressure switch and command on the a/c. If it clocks on you might want to have the system evacuated and replace the receiver dryer and line o-rings and convert to r134a
