Strange Overheating - Help

1991 Camaro RS with a Z28 350 Engine
----
Just bought the car, problem no temp gauge working which worried me about it as it is.

Was driving, made it around 48 miles then broke down on the side of the road, it stopped firing all together (Got hot) pulled over and let it cool off, took the T-Stat out thinking clog because there was pressure on the bottom end and not the top end.

Bolt up, re-fill coolant (Didn't bleed because didn't loose water but probably should of bled it anyway).

Towed Home

Wouldn't start fried something in Ignition, no spark... (Replaced Pick-up Coil, Ignition Coil, Button, Cap, ICM)... Sparks and ran again!

Headed down the road and made it 20 Miles, Heated up & shut off again... This time not as hot but still hot.

Towed Home, Still Has Spark this time though...

(No Knocks, Not Loosing Water, No Leaks Under The Car) - I do believe Air Dam is missing I didn't notice one but was told this isn't required to keep cool but I think I'm going to buy one or make one when I get home.

Possible Clog I think, no water is making it to top hose... Like there is a clog or something not releasing... Possibly Radiator Cap? It's never been replaced from the looks of it.

Anyway can anyone give me a little clue on what is the most likely cause so when I get home that'll be the first thing I attempt.

-T-Stat - is out just to get it cooling for testing and eliminate that problem
-Water Pump - ? Was told this isn't bad unless it's leaking
-Air Dam - ? Was told wasn't required to keep cool
-Clog - ?
-Head Gasket - ? I don't think so if the water isn't going anywhere
-Oil - ? Bought the car with the new engine whoever did the swap messed up and didn't put a dipstick in it can't really check, used a wire put 2 Quarts in it, going to drain it and check and re-fill. Also making sure no water is in it.
-Radiator - ? This would be included with the Clog pretty sure... Going to flush later.

Am I missing anything?

Re: Strange Overheating - Help

You NEED a airdam. Without it you will overheat like you described. Also make sure fans are kicking in

Re: Strange Overheating - Help

It was a lower radiator hose but it still runs a hot after 60 miles it gets hot... So looking a making an Air Dam.

Any recommendations on making one for temp usage until i can afford to buy one? I do have wood and different types of stuff probably great to use...

Any tips?

Bro I think I found your problem... if you have no flow in your top radiator hose and the car is overheating your thermostat is not opening up.

He said that he took the thermostat out on the first post.

Have you checked the wire to the temp gauge? You should be able to pick up the air dam for a reasonable price out of the classifieds, out of a salvage yard, or off Craigs list. You need the air dam.
