Hypertech thermostat and performance chip
Hello I picked up a Hypertech thermostat for my 92 Z. Soon after I got it I learned I had to "chip" the car with hypertechs 230$ chip in order for the fans to run in conjunction with this thermostat. Wondering if anyone used this chip before, wanted to know what are the benefits and how will it affect my emissions .
Thanks

It will have no effect on emissions and very little effect on performance, but your fans will come on sooner.

The chip is has a mimimal effect on your preformance, emmisions, and MPG. I had one back in the day on my Mustang and it actually slowed the car down in the 1/4 mile times. Not much a tenth on ave, but I sure didn't make it any faster. And the MPG's were mabey and I mabey 2-4 better on the highway.
All that chip does is give you a tad more timing and kickes the fans on earlier in conjunction with the lower temp thermostat. Theres a few other things that are changed in the bin file but not much. You didnt really need to get the chip if you wanted the fans to turn on earlier, you could of piggybacked a switch into the line and then had the option to turn on the fans manually but yet you still would have the ecm controling the fans if you didnt turn them on yourself.
Yes people are still messing with those hypertech chips although I have seen the bin files and there really isnt much done to them else then the fact that they lower the temps to basiaclly offset the detination that could accure since they advanced the WOT timing to gain a few.. and I mean a few Hp.
For the 200+ dollars it cost for that one chip, you could have a chip burner, the chip/adapter, and a ALDL cable to burn your own chips which would mean you could do anything you wanted to the ecm for as long as had the equitptment.

Re: Hypertech thermostat and performance chip
I installed a 180 degree tstat and a 180 degree fan switch from Hypertech in my 1989 RS in July, and the car ran cooler, but ran rich - I lost 2 mpg. When I would get on it, I could watch the fuel gauge move. When I installed the Hypertech chip a month ago, the mpg's came back, it leaned out to what it should be, and the car's performance and acceleration were vastly improved. I live in California so smog concerns are key, and I know with it running rich, it would not have passed. Plus, the chip boosted my HP along the way. I love the increased power.
A chip is not a wonder or a cure-all, it is a tool - like improving the intake and exhaust. I would not be too quick to slam it. It's definitely working for my application. Now, it not only runs cooler, it runs stronger.

Im not slamming the chip. But I have seen the bin files on those things and there isnt anything done to them except adding timing, a tad bit of fuel, and changing the on/off values of the fan.
IMO 200 bucks to burn as many chips as I want or whatever one of those cost is not even a hard question to answer.
