What temp fan switch to get?

Hey guys,

84 T/A, single electric fan. L69 motor.

What temp fan switch should I get to go with a 180* thermostat?

If I run a 180 T-stat to go with a 205 on, 195 off Fan switch, will the fan have less of a duty cycle or more? Would I be better off going with a 195 on 185 off switch?

The reason I'm asking is because the connector on my fan switch melted off and I need to get a new one (as well as try and find a way to keep the lead from melting off in the future). I just want to get one that will fit best with my current application (Aluminum Radiator, 180* T-stat).

Any and all advice is welcome! Thanks!

Re: Fan Switch Question

The 185 off will never stop running once on with a 180 t-stat.

Because the actual temp would barely ever get below the sensor "off" position, even when running on the highway?

Or do I need an "off" that's below the 180* of the T-stat?

Seems to me that it would be better having one that's slightly "higher" in temp would be better right?

Re: Fan Switch Question

Mostly because thermostats aren't 100% precise. You'd want a shut off temp at least 10-15° above your t-stat temp, if you want you fan to cycle on/off.

So looking at a factory switch or 205 on, 195 off would be preferable?

Re: Fan Switch Question

A factory fan switch will turn on at 238°F. I used a sw505 (a-zone, 215°) fan switch on my 91 which is reasonably close to the ECM fan control temperature(220°) and was practical on a stock 305 TBI with a 195° t-stat .
