Single Electric to Dual TPI fan install questions

Hey guys,

Since I've been having a fan issue (Discovered it's either the relay or the inline-fuse today) I decided to mock-up my dual fan set up to see how it would install (and if it would have gone in nice, I'd have hooked up just one of the fans).

However, I ran into a small issue.

The top bracket went on without issue. The bottom bracket, only one of the mounting holes matched up with my car's mounting bracket. I started by putting the top bolt in the bracket to hold the fans in I found the bottom two bolts fell about 1-2 inches below where the bottom bracket is.

Could anyone who's done this install lend me some pointers?

I had to re-install my single fan in the mean-time but I figured my 84 is the same as any 86+ with dual fans. I figured wrong...

I tried to flip the bottom bracket over, but then the bolt holes for the fans run into my wonder bar and power steering cooling lines, so that's a no go.

Does anyone have any pictures of how their bottom bracket is installed on their TPI car?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Something like this help ?
*Edit, I notice the line the bolts (7) follow to the U-nut (11) is wrong, the fan doesn't bolt the lower fan bracket (10) to the radiator support. The PS cooler line bolts (8) are what go to 11 and hold the bracket to the radiator support. (or, it's just drawn in a manner that makes it appear wrong)

Wow, awsome picture! If I'd have had this 3 hours ago I could have had my dual fan set up installed, if only one fan hooked up and running.

So it looks like i need to take off my power steering cooler line to mount up the lower bracket. That would make sense now that I look at it.

Or do I?

The more I look at it, the more I think I had it right. At a better time in the future I'll see what hapens. The only reason I'm thinking of adding the dual fans is because with the AC on and in traffic, the car will eventually overheat. The single fan just can't keep up with it.

Ok, that picture makes everything come into line now.

Next question.

1. How well will only one operable fan of the dual fan cool my car? It'll be hooked in just like my single electric fan is now. I don't have a second relay or any way of hooking up the second fan. I would think that in stop and go it should be fine...unless I run my AC which is not really a posibility here in England. I can barely put my T-tops off because of the rain.

2. One of the fan blades has a chunk missing out of it, how bad would that affect the balance of the fan? Bad enough that I should get a new fan blade?

Re: Single Electric to Dual TPI fan install questions

1) I suppose since the 350's use a dual fan, single for normal driving, it's should be fine. They move a pretty good amount of air.

2) depends on how big a piece is missing and how close to the venturi ring (outer edge) it is.

I'll swap it out then now that I have a proper diagram and our cars run 90% with one fan on the dual fan set up anyway. I should be ok unless I"m stuck on a 100* day in gridlock which I never am.

I will go ahead an order a new fan blade to replace the bad one just to be on the safe side.

If/when I eventually swap over to EFI, I'd put a harness in from a proper TPI car to run both fans, but in the mean time....

Can I hook a separate 30A relay inline with the primary single fan relay, to activate the second fan when the first comes on using the battery as a power source? This way, when the factory relay clicks on, it activates the second relay (powering only the relay, the fan is powered by the battery) so both fans are on at the same time?

I don't know how I'd otherwise get the second fan running.

Ran into a problem. I got the bracket installed, the fan in place and the upper bracket mounted. Ran into a problem actually mounting the fan. Because I'm running a larger radiator (Becool aluminum radiator), to install properly, I have to space it all out about 1/2 to 1" on the bottom to match the new upper bracket mounting point. If I don't space it out on the bottom, the fan lays against the radiator and won't spin. However, when I try and space it, the bottom fan brackets run into the wonderbar (The fan mount points where they bolt to the bracket). I can't move the fan mounting points out far enough not to have it lay against the radiator

Any suggestions other than removing the wonderbar?

Re: Single Electric to Dual TPI fan install questions

I've already updated this, but I had to put my factory radiator back in and so tried the dual fan set-up. It went in just fine. The Be-Cool radiator pushed the lower mounting points out so far that they all ran into the TDS wonderbar that I'm running. I'd have to cut so much off the bottom of them that it would compromise the integrity of the lower mounting point if I wanted to get them to fit.
