Temp switch

Sorry for going here again. I know somewhere here is my answer but I can't find it and I've read alot of forms.

I have a 91 RS that came with a 305 and 1 fan. It has a switch that starts the fan at like 230 deg. Is that a problem? I put a 195 deg stat in and it is working. It opens when the gauge gets to arround 220 rite at the center. Then it goes to 160 deg bach at arround 1/4 gauge and heats up if I'm in traffic and stopped. But down the road it stays cold.

Should I put a lower switch in? I could just put a toggle in. Or I could just ground it and have it on all the time. I am in the process of tuning the car after putting in a 350. I have an EBL ststem.

Is it OK to run it colder? I could get a 180 deg stat and a new switch. I allready have a new 3core aluminum rad.

I am just wanting to get it rite befor A/C season

Re: Temp switch

put a lower temp switch in... but depending on what you put in, you will need to replace the t-stat with a lower temp, as well. would not recommend running a fan constantly... in regards to the switch, one that comes on at 200, off at 185 will work great, but again, if you don't change the t-stat, the fan will cycle on/off as advertised, but the t-stat will never open, which will, in effect, make your fan run more than it needs to because that alone will never overcome the heat and your engine would have to get really hot to open the t-stat and once it cools down somewhat and closes back up, you're back to the fan pulling all the duty. the t-stat needs to be able to open before the fan comes on...

Re: Temp switch

Paste these part # on the Autozone website and it will give you the part numbers you need.
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/

TS136 - closes 204 degrees
TS85 - closes at 211 degrees
TS147 - closes at 222 degrees

On a stock motor, the 210+ degree temps will give you the best emissions for your smog test.
The TS85 is only like 10$ on rockauto. Might invest in a 180* stat. Better performance.

Our cars are designed to run hot. 230* is normal, the factory fan switch, which is what runs yours doesn't come on until 225*, so you are WAYYYY normal in the operating range. That said, I put a 350 swap in my car and I"m running a 180* thermostat and a 215* fan switch. The fan almost never comes on unless I get stuck in traffic.
