dual radiator fans

whats up bruds, i was out of work for a few months from an injury and goto start my iroc again, the battery was dead. I hooked up a jumper box and the pass side fan came on; the driver side fan has never come on. Started the car drove it for 15 mins parked it and the pass side fan stayed on after shut off. I disconnected the battery did reading here, hooked battery back up fan was off. Little over a year ago i put a new ground switch in for fans.

So today i go out hoping to hook the jumper box and have the fans enable, then disconnecting either the fuse or relay. I let the car idle and drove 1 mile then came back.

I believe i discovered a secondary problem. The driver side fan is now working and pass side fan is NOT. Im going to the store shortly to buy 2 new relays that are located pass side of radiator, which i believe are for the fans. One is melted pretty bad i wouldve thought its the problem, but why did one fan work and stop and the other start working?

I have a picture of the 2 relays(one burnt) and one on the left im unsure the purpose. Its a harness connector for the fans, but what is it?

So im asking why did all of a sudden the driver side fan start working yet pass side not?

Re: dual radiator fans

Driver fan relay or wiring has intermittent short in it, thats why it came on this time and not the other time. Pass fan only comes on when engine gets hot enough, its controlled by a different sensor than driver side fan. So if engine didnt get hot enough it wont come on. My theory anyway lol

Re: dual radiator fans

thank you for your post. id like to test the power going to pass side to make sure its getting power, and im going to test the motor manualy in a bit. maybe mixed them up which one i thought was dead.

but i got the part to replace the burnt looking one and before installing i decided to make the fan come and switch relays. it did nothing but disable the operating driver side fan.

How do i test for power on the burnt relay(in middle)? when i switch to defroster my fans dont come on. i read in the manual orange(for 1987) is the hot. As i look at relay from left to right its orange, yellow, green/white, and red/black. On the relay that works fine(right) it has orange, yellow/white, green/white, and red/black.

Re: dual radiator fans

To be honest i couldnt really tell you much about how to test wiring I'm extremely limited on that knowledge. Maybe ase doc could jump in here with more specifics, he helped me out a lot with troubleshooting my map sensor wiring.

Re: dual radiator fans

yeah i read a realy informative article thought i posted. driver side fan should work but in 1987 only did the dual fan setup have the second fan turn on 20degrees hotter than first so the guy said youll never see the second one on. in 1988 they realized if both fans are used when ac/defrosters enabled the ac condenser functions better. so im going to look into getting a chip
