I am converting my 1985 v6 2.8L to a serpentine system. I went to the junk yard and got all the pulleys and everything I needed from an 87 2.8L. I got the water pump from it since it would be a reverse rotation pump. But when I put it on my 85 it is not the same as my water pump so it wont fit properly. It looks to me that the water pumps changed in 87. I am wondering is there a special pre-87 reverse rotation water pump that I need?

I think if I have found the answer to my question. Its either I run with standard rotation pump or I get a new timing cover from a 87. If I run with a standard rotation pump I will probably over heat though. The 85-86 timing cover does not have a reverse flow pump. Well not one that I have found. I looked in every place I could think of and I cannot find one for an 85-86.

Wow, I was going to chime in but I've never seen anything like you're posting there. Must be a V6 specific thing. The water pumps on V-8s don't even deal with the timing cover.

If your refering to the vanes in the casting.They are different because the reverse rotation waterpump causes the water to flow opposite the direction of your v-belt set-up.The vanes are a mirror image of one another to allow the water to flow into the block.You'll need that 87 timing cover or the pump will not seal to your 85 cover.

V8 waterpumps have vanes are cast into the body of the pump, but are basically reversed for serp Vs v-belt.
