V belt vs serp belt water pump
Hey i am currently running a Serp belt that the rotation of water pump is opposite of the crank and want to run the water pump in the same direction as the crank if i get a water pump for a older v belt setup will it allow me to run the water pump and crank the same direction? Ive been looking at pics and it seems true just wanted to check. Thanks

Re: V belt vs serp belt water pump
A clockwise rotation long water pump will cavitate on a 88-92 serpentine setup. The impeller is not designed to move water in that direction.

Re: V belt vs serp belt water pump
So if i changed the pulleys to v bent i wont have a issue? the pulleys look pretty close in size... ok sorry i see what your saying but im going to change the rotation of the water pump to clockwise. so the older style vbelt water pump does in fact run clockwise?

If you change to vbelt use a older pump, 85-87 used a 6 grove serpentine style belt for the alt. I wouldn't go back in technology the serpentine works geat and you can delete anything that is unneeded a/c , ps, air pump with delete pulley/brackets and different belts.

ya the issue is the serpentine belt bracket on the passenger side get in the way of the turbo im looking for options to keep the alt and ps on the driver side so i have the room for the turbo.

Re: V belt vs serp belt water pump
Yeah if you go with v belts just get a water pump for a late 60's to mid 80's SBC
Match your pump and pulley style together. They had short water pump ('55 to 67 IIRC), long water pump ('68 to mid 80's) and serpentine (mid 80's up)

Re: V belt vs serp belt water pump
The factory serpentine setup has the auto belt tensioner and is over all a far better setup than a v-belt system from the earlier times. However, people like myself and this guy generally go back to the V-belt because we either don't have the room or don't like the looks of all the deleted pullies. I believe that if you use a turn buckle style adjustment for the v belt and you check it often and the car is not a daily driver you will have no difficulty with v belts. Only argument I have heard that I believe that makes v-belts the bad choice is if you have a really high output alternator that can cause some serious drag and slip on a v-belt. In that situation a serpentine belt with it's tensioner would really be superior. Although you could then switch to a Gilmer drive style setup.

Re: V belt vs serp belt water pump
If you switch to V-belt you can get a mid-mount or low mount alternator setup and save gobs of room up top. It would also help to lower the engines center of gravity but that is fairly negligible.

Re: V belt vs serp belt water pump
I have ran V belts on my engine for 10 years. Daily driver for alittle over half that time.
CS130 105 amp alt.
Chrome std. type alt bracket
March 5.5" alum crank pulley
Summit alum water pump, power steering pump and alt pulleys
1970 monte carlo PS pump
Home made PS pump bracket
While it was a daily driver I also raced it at the track. 6400 rpm shifts.
Now same acc. drive setup, 7200 rpm shifts.
I have never had a belt prob. No slipping or squeaking belts, no belt toss, etc
