Need more help troubleshooting temp gauge

Hey all,

I've done extensive research but I'd like more specific insight on an issue I'm having.

I just swapped a carb'd L31 into my 1987 camaro. Previously a carb'd LG4. My temp gauge is not working properly. The thermostat, temp sensor, and sending unit are new. The gauge worked prior to the swap. Now, the gauge is either stuck past hot, or will occasionally fluctuate to 220 and then back to hot. This happens regardless of whether the sensor is connected or not.

Any ideas where I should start? Once this rain subsides I will take a voltage meter to the sending wires, at the sensor and gauge, and update my findings. Could this be a ground issue? Voltage issue? A description of all power and ground wires related to the CTS would be great.

I appreciate any help. Thanks.

I would say make sure you hooked up all the grounds on your engine block.

Sounds good .. Is it possible to simply re-ground the temp sensor wire? Or can this be a ground issue seperate from the CTS sending unit? Any other grounds that affect the temp sensor?

Re: Need more help troubleshooting temp gauge

The threads on sensors and senders are grounding them to the block/engine.
A "sensor" is what sends information to the ECM.
A "sender" sends information to a "gage" not connected to the ECM.
I recently was reading my trusty "Chilton's" and it mentioned a anti-seize compound that was dialectic. The closest I've come to that would be the "Copper" type.
It was under the o2 sensor section so I guess there worried about not getting a good enough ground with traditional silver colored anti-seize.

Like Ron said they get ground through the block. Make sure you hooked the grounds at the back of the engine usually grounded under a bolt through the bell housing bolt.

Noted, thanks everyone. I know which grounds you're referring to. I'll make sure they're connected and seat properly and will let you all know.
