What type of temp gauge?

Hi,
Any of you guys tell me if this gauge is plug in or electric? It seems that it has a plastic tube to it. I did not want to remove afraid of spilling fluid or something. Pardon my ignorance!
Thanks.

Re: What type of temp gauge?

that is a mechanical temp gauge-there is Freon gas in that line and gauge will be ruined if line is cut.

Re: What type of temp gauge?

Thanks! It seems that it is measuring radiator temp. Still freaon or coolant?

Re: What type of temp gauge?

It is sealed, and will have some sort of fluid in it that expands when heated. Probably not Freon, as that will undergo a state change (liquid to gas and back) at various temperatures, that will DRAMATICALLY confound the meter reading.

Won't have the same fluid in it as what it's measuring necessarily; any more than yerbasic mercury thermometer has anything besides mercury in it, no matter what you're measuring with it.

Re: What type of temp gauge?

Can I remove it and plug the connecting tube?

Re: What type of temp gauge?

Not really... the tube needs to go, too. The whole deal as an inseparable unit.

Which of course would then free up the spot in the head for the OE sending unit.

Re: What type of temp gauge?

Ok...so I replaced my temp sending unit and now I have the original temp gauge working and the plug in temp gauge working as well. They both seem to be recording the same temp. Next task is to remove the plug in temp gauge...
