Car overheats a little bit when driving at low rpm in traffic
Car overheats a little bit when driving at low rpm in traffic
I have no idea why but when I'm in traffic and the pace is slow or I sit for a bit and move a few feet then stop again it and wait for the traffic to move I have to turn on my heater to cool off my engine. It gets up to about 230-235 degrees on my gauge. Please any ideas?

Primary fan don't even kick on til around 235ish on the temp as best I can tell. Which is way too high a setting from the factory in my opinion. These cars are notorious for running hot. When my car starts getting around 210 I turn the a/c on to make both fans turn. You can change the temp switch in it to one that turns the fan on earlier and that is something I should have already done also. They have some good reading on this on this website on how to fix this.

^^^^^What dmccain said. I used to worry all the time when I seen my temp start to rise. BUT, as long as your fan is coming on, cooling system is in good shape and not OVERHEATING BY SPEWING ANTIFREEZE OVERBOARD, and engine is tuned well, it's not a problem.
I nipped the 235ish temp fan on with a reprogram on the chip. Fan now comes on at 210. MUUUUCH better!

I sent my chip to TunedPerformance in Colorado. He's on here, but not sure if he does it anymore. Other members here can do it, just not sure who they are ATM.

If your using a fan that is controlled by the switch in the head then you can change it from the stock switch to one that comes on at a lower temperature as mentioned. I would use the 204* switch and just keep the 195* thermostat that came stock.
. Here's the part #s and fan “on” temperatures.
Part # TFS8 = 204 on
# TFS4 = 213 on
# TFS1 = 224 on
There are also a few switches made by "Jet" and "Hypertec" that go even lower.
I went the extra mile and installed temperature controlled ,adjustable fan controllers that allow me to keep the car in the 180* to 190* area with a 180* thermostat to match.

I'm on my phone ATM and I cannot find the button you are telling me to look for, but I have a 1990 Pontiac firebird, it has a 305 engine in it, the transmission is a overdrive stock transmission, gears and axles are stock
