88 RS with 2.8 overheating
Hi. New here. I just bought an 88 RS over the weekend with a 2.8. The previous owner said someone "told" them it was a head gasket issue causing it to overheat. She also said she had seen white smoke from tail pip. I drove it around several times, it did in fact overheat rapidly, but no steam from pipe. The radiator does have a leak. It has an electric fan, but no shroud. I know I should rip that go cart motor out of it and replace with a 350...but the little V6 is so complete, unmolested, cruise control, new AC compressor, power steering pump....lots of new parts. So I may want to keep it around while I do some body work, and some interior. How do I know for sure if its a head gasket? Yesterday I bought a thermostat and THOUGHT I was gonna just do a 10 minute replacement on that, to rule that out. NO...the housing is shoved up under the throttle body. I will try again today when Im less pissed.
