AC Compressor Choice
AC Compressor Choice
To All,
I need to replace the AC compressor in my 92 tbi RS 305. Looking at AutoZone and O'Reilly, I have two choices, one being a Murray and the second being Compressor Works. I've decided to choose a new unit rather than remanufactured and I'll be replacing ALL the "O" rings, switches, Accumulator etc....
So the question is, what has been your experience with these two manufacturers and which would you recommend?
Thanks,
Ron

Re: AC Compressor Choice
Murray is one of the oldest suppliers in the cooling system parts business. They were ancient 40 yrs ago when my late little bro worked for a parts distributor.
Compressor Works is not familiar to me.
"New" compressors (and other similar parts) tend to be cheeeeeeeeep knockoffs, typically cast from pure chinesium somewhere in the Far East. I'd recommend a reman from a reputable mfr such as Murray or 4 Seasons in preference to that.
Replacing ALL O-rings, the rubber line sections, the accumulator/dryer, and the orifice tube, while also flushing out all the remaining (metal) parts, is a good idea. Switches, probably not worth bothering with.
I've written up MANY times on here how to renew an AC system, swap it to 134A, repair the other things you haven't talked about yet that are just land mines waiting for you to step on, etc. Search this site for my userID and "orifice tube", and read one of them.
