Floating temperature gauge on 1987 Merc Cougar?
I have a 1987 V6 Cougar that normally runs at a normal temp, just below half. If I drive it for about 10 miles or more the temperature will occasionally go all the way up to the H and immediately go right back down to below half. I don't notice any difference in performance when the temperature gauge does this. I drove about 100 miles the other day and it did it several times and the car didn't overheat. I'm hoping it's a faulty temperature gauge

Thirdgen.org is dedicated to 82-92 f-bodies. I'd suggest a site that might be more helpful to you if I knew of one. Best of luck with your issues.

ONly one way to find out, change the sensor. Other than that I would try a Cougar related board or at least a Ford related board vs a Specific third gen Camaro / Firebird forum
