1986 V-6, 2.8 Coolant Temperature Sensor

1986 V-6, 2.8 Electric fan energizes when engine is cold and continues to run. Check engine light on. After a warm restart fan will not energize even with hot engine.
Which is the proper coolant temp sensor? (I see two near thermostat on manifold) Could this be the problem?
