Fan Shroud Fitment
Fan Shroud Fitment
Hi, im new to the fourms. Was curious if anyone could help. I want to buy a v8 fan shroud for my 82 camaro, but the only one ive found is from a 92 v8 firebird. Will it fit? Or do i need to keep searching? Thanks for any info in advance.
Re: Fan Shroud Fitment
There are a couple basic fan shroud options... The biggest is mechanical fan bolted to the engine, or electric. Within the electric category, there are single or dual fans. Just as a general rule of thumb, all the single fans and brackets are the same for the full production run. For mechanical clutch fans, the shroud is different based on the engine. A V8 puts the fan further forward than a V6, so the V6 uses a deeper shroud to reach the fan.
Now right off hand, I'm thinking all the 82 V8s used a clutch fan. Without looking it up, I'm going to guesstimate that 83 or 84 was about the last year for a clutch fan on a V8 Camaro. GM went to electric pretty quickly for obvious reasons. When you consider that clutch fans can lock up and throw blades, or the front shaft off the waterpump can break and send the fan flying, traffic accidents pushing the radiator support back, destroying the fan shroud, you can imagine how finding a good shroud for a mechanical fan could be a PITA.
The easy answer is to run an electric fan. The upper and lower fan brackets from a later thirdgen should bolt right into an earlier thirdgen, or fabricate a shroud and/or use an aftermarket electric fan that doesn't require a full shroud.
