Hi, temp gage not working - shows max'd out. replaced waterpump recently due to seeping out weep hole, very little. temp gae was working though. sending unit connected. sending unit bad? If replaced, does it need any type of pipe thread ? looks like factory has some red in color. Thx

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: 1989 Iroc 5.7

Maxed out = the wire is shorted to ground somewhere

Yes it could be the sending unit but maybe not.

Unplug the wire from the sending unit. If the gauge goes to 0 and stays there, the SU is bad. If the gauge stays maxed, it's something else. If the gauge doesn't sort of "float" when the key is off, it may just be mechanically stuck.

Yes the SU needs some form of sealant on the threads. Pipe thread sealer with PTFE or Teflon tape work fine. Gotta make sure the threads of the SU make contact with the casting though.

Air dam?

Is the car actually running hot? or is everything normal just the gauge is whacked?

normal, other than the typical running warm. I installed a bypass switch to just turn both fans on many years ago. In South Carolina, it is just too hot. THX
