Re: Car overheats either with long drive or AC on.
Ok, I installed the TPI fan motor which is also the same motor that was used on a ton of other GM cars from that time....... painted it and was waiting for it to dry so it'd look nice.
I really feel no difference in how much air it pulls compared to the LS1 fan motor.........I'm using my perfectly calibrated "hand feel tester" though a i try to avoid getting it too close to the running belts...........the air though feels much more :concentrated" and stronger compared to the original TPI shroudless design I was using though. but it seems to draw less power and thats good for the electrical system,!!
Re: Car overheats either with long drive or AC on.
Awesome to hear it just swapped in, have you noticed any difference with the voltage gauge/lights flickering less or anything like that?
Sounds like I'm going to have to do this swap soon! lol
Re: Car overheats either with long drive or AC on.
So far so good! Voltage is in the good area so far and it doesn;t seem to affect cooling but I want to do more long running tests..... but I need to get more gas so it can run longer. We are on fumes lol
Also, important to note that my third auxiliary emergency fan is not a factor since it won't turn on with theses fans on.....so these results / tests are all based on the combo TPI / LS1 motors in a LS1 shroud on a stock TPi electrical system.
Re: Car overheats either with long drive or AC on.
Ok, tested it!
Def works good...helps decrease the voltage / amperage usage of 2 LS1 motors.... So 1 fan is the TPI fan motor and the other is the LS1 fan motor. I just used a label maker to identify which is which.
So got the benefits of the shroud but not the current draw of 2 LS motors which is quite high. I used both AC delco units....I noticed my spare four seasons TPI unit does NOT fit well and the fan wobbles. on it as the little spacer is not contoured like the ac delco / stock GM units. .

Thanks for doing all the leg-work on that! Sounds like we found a pretty good combination for the LS1 fan shroud.
I'm sure it doesn't really matter, but are you running the TPI fan on the driver side for the computer controlled one or the passenger for the switch controlled?
Re: Car overheats either with long drive or AC on.
I have the ecm Controlled LS1 fan on the passenger and TPI on the driver…..mines a bit different cause its a single fan car (with some elec gremlins) so i have the driver side as just condenser…also my pusher is on the driver so if i dont have the ac on the LS1 will come on at temp and so will the aux pusher if ut gets too hot
i always use the ac though so in theory itd just be the two fans in the shroud which seem to keep it plenty cool!
Re: Car overheats either with long drive or AC on.
Just ran across this thread, good pic of the plastic that keeps engine cool. BTW - was out driving last few days, 95 degrees out and blazing sun. with a/c on, my temp never gets to 200. I forget the range on the analog guage, but its in the middle. so with both fans running, it never gets 220 when I'm not in heavy traffic.

Very nice, I'm guessing since my thermostat issue was fixed I could probably return to the factory fans if I really wanted.
But I'll still try and pick up one factory fan and follow 1989karr's method!

I'd keep the LS1 fans amd swap out 1 motor to an old TPI motor....that or you could even swap out both LS1 motors for 2 - TPi motors.... the shroud really helps IMO
Plus if you ever need to change the motor the fans pull right out!
Re: Car overheats either with long drive or AC on.
im not sure but when i turn the air on in my 86 iroc,it tries to bog down and my temp rises,i have no leaks and my air is cold as hell,my coolant reservior is low all the time
Re: Car overheats either with long drive or AC on.
I remembered our conversation a few weeks back and snapped a photo. This was 100F, cruising at 65mph, A/C on max. Make sure you have all of your air dams and other air flow direction plastic that is below the car in place.

when you turn on the ac and the car bogs down, that’s a good sign that the AC is working and has a nice charge, make sure your fan turns on when you engage the AC
Re: Car overheats either with long drive or AC on.
These "Low-Power" Engines do suffer a good amount of Power-Loss to the Wheels, when the A.C. is ON.
This is a Normal (Relatively) condition/ Normal operation.

I just want to make sure that you understand, the Engine Coolant Temperature Instrument has NO correlation with the Air Conditioning System.
Your Car could have the Engine Coolant Boiling and overflowing out of the Expansion-Tank, on to the ground...
As long as the Air Conditioning Condenser is being cooled/ has air passing through; the Air Conditioning System will blow Cold Air inside the Cabin.
