fan is on all the time, temp gauge is maxed

92 firebird tbi 305.

I am hoping that the temp gauge is just a bad thermistor on the driver side head (easy to get to)

I know there are potentially 2 other temp sensors (intake) and passenger head.

My question is what colors are the 2 wires going to the sensor on the passenger head.

I have a feeling that it is supposed to be the 2 wires pictured below, as this would explain why the fan is always on.

can anyone confirm that those wires should have a pigtail added to connect to the passenger side sensor?

Thanks,
Chris

If that sensor down there in your ac hard line is unplugged, it wil;l cause the fan to stay on all the time.

The wire going to the fan switch in the head is i believe either dk brown or black (color blind here) It is ONE wire... the switch grounds the current into the head once it closes at the appropriate temp.

its right between cylinder 6 and 8 spark plugs... theres a knock sensor right below it that uses the same connector, so dont get them confused.

Also, the connector will probably crumble to dust and you'll need a replacement connector.

LT GRN and LT BLUE pair are maybe for the AC pressure cycling switch.

Re: fan is on all the time, temp gauge is maxed

When you shot it with your handy-dandy infrared thermometer, what was the ACTUAL engine temp?

LT GRN and LT BLUE pair ARE for the AC pressure cycling switch.
Fixed.

THE wire going to the fan switch in the pass side head, if it exists, is dk grn w/ wht stripe.

Yes the temp gauge sending unit could easily be bad. Very cheeeeeep and eeeeeezy to change out, except that abuncha coolant will come out of its hole. Or perhaps, its wiring has been "improved", like the AC wires in your photo.
