might be, it depends on whats wrong. Have you tried checking the sensor in the back of the passenger side head?, Check to see if it is disconnected. Do you have a Digital Voltmeter??? If you do, let me know and I will draw you up a diagram so that you can check the sensor and wiring for proper operation.

On my engine the sensor is on the driver side head in the front behind the power steering pump...or is it on the intake..but it may be differnet on the 3.1 but i think that the sensor that 2.8 boy was talking about is the fan switch. And if i remember right it turns the fan on at like 220 degrees or something. The reason i say that is because if you ground the wire out that is going to that switch the fan will come on. Anyway my 0.02

If you ground the wire attached to the temp sensor, with the key on and engine not running, the gauge should peg out high. This would tell you the temp gauge and the wire are ok, and sensor is bad.

When you start the engine the gauge should peg high also, while the starter is running. If it doesn't, temp gauge bad.

Temp gauge sensor is on driver side head at front, single wire. The fan switch is on the pass. side head rear, single wire. Fuel injection cold start temp sensor in the intake manifold below throttle body, next to the cold start timer, two wires.
