Radiator fan turns on with ignition

Hello all. Rebuilt 350 in my 84 Z, no ECM, single fan. I didn't run the wiring for the fan so I'm tryng to do some troubleshooting. It wasn't turning on at all until I found the blown inline fuse. Replaced that. At the same time I replaced the fan switch in the manifold because it was provided by a shop that did poor work and I wanted to play it safe. Now the fan comes on with the ignition. Red to battery, blue to fan, white to fan switch, and I assume yellow to ignition? Any idea what I should be looking for?

That is aftermarket fan control-Hayden i think. The turn-on temp might be set too low- that little blue box with the white screwdriver slot is the temp adjust. The sender normally used with this type fan control is a varible resistance thermistor instead of on-off switch.

Re: Radiator fan turns on with ignition

So I'm assuming I'd either have to go back to the other switch, or replace the relay to a more standard one? Or can it be made to work as is by adjusting the screw?

Re: Radiator fan turns on with ignition

also make sure the sender threaded brass part is grounded to the engine-thread tape or too much sealant might prevent the sender from grounding properly. A knock sensor module is seen in your pics and that indicates your car is L69 H.O. and came with e-fan originally-there might be remains of original fan circuit still in place.Do you know if the fan itself is original or aftermarket?

Re: Radiator fan turns on with ignition

The engine is out of an early 90s pickup. It was stripped down to the block and rebuilt from scratch. I believe the fan was pulled out of a different Camaro if I remember correctly.

The fan switch came with something on the threading when I bought it, I didn't add any tape or sealant.

Re: Radiator fan turns on with ignition

Update. Tried using a more standard relay but no luck. When I unplugged the fan switch and tried grounding it to turn the fan on, all I get is a clicking by where the ignition wire taps in. Is that normal or is there a different issue here?

While you are right in the area I suggest you fix the throttle return spring. Does not look safe.
