1987 Camaro overheating problem

I have a '87 Camaro convertible 305 LG4/ Auto, last spring we were in a traffic jam and the car overheated, coolant was pouring out of the heater core, so I bypassed the heater core, as money was a little tight this year, the local shop wanted $500 plus, to put a new heater core in it so that's going to be a next year project. so last weekend I had the car out to clean it and get it ready for storage, as I was about to put it away, the temp light came on and it started to overheat. I noticed the fan wasn't kicking on, so after it cooled down, I put the A/C on and the fan kicked on right away. My thoery is back when the heater core blew, it probably got hot and blew the core out because the fan wouldn't kick on. so i'm thinking it could be the fan switch. from what i read the switch is on the left side head. I called my friend at the Chevy dealer and he said the illustration in the parts book wasn't clear where it was located , but the part is discontinued from GM, but there are some dealers that still have it and I prefer to keep my cars with oem parts. Does this sound like it could be the problem, has anyone had this problem before? thanks

It seems that you are diagnosing your own problem. I wish I could help.
I am having an overheating issue with my '92 TA.

Re: 1987 Camaro overheating problem

Disconnect the wire from the switch and ground it. If the fan turns on, then replace the switch. If it doesn’t, then work your way up the circuit (relay, fuse, wiring, etc)
