COOLING FAN NOT WORK (RS 2.8L SINGLE FAN)
COOLING FAN NOT WORK (RS 2.8L SINGLE FAN)
Hey guys, so i have a 1989 camaro RS, comes with the 2.8L and it has a single electric fan. So here's the deal, the previous owner bought a sword and decided it would be a good idea of cut up all the wires on the ac and radio component, kidding. He installed an aftermarket radio is what i'm guessing and he cut the yellow and black wire(Coolant Temp sensor) that leads to the ECU along with other wires that i have no idea lead to. I'm only worried about the fan since it never knows what temp it's at, it won't turn on. How do i know what to solder together, i'm a rookie at this and this is my first big project, is there a diagram with color(i know that's too much to ask for) that i can look at? Thanks.

Try taking a pic if you can. I had mouse chewed wires and I couldn't tell which was which with my naked eye, but the camera showed a slight color difference that helped me repair the wires correctly. Also, If you post a pic of the damage to this thread it would help us help you.

Well, if the sen-sore still has its pigtail attached, solder the yellow to the yellow and the black to the black.
If it doesn't, then get a new sen-sore, and look for the ones that come with a pigtail. Solder either wire to the yellow of the car's harness and the other to the black.
Not sure how installing a radio would lead to sodomizing the CTS wiring, or really, anything else under the hood; butt hay, we all know how these [mr_spock] humans [/mr_spock] can be. Totally illogical and emotionally unstable.
As said, pics would help, to maybe see what all else got efffffed up.

Hard to know what wires exactly got diced (or why the previous owner was getting that goofy with the wires), but as far as the CTS, the sensor itself should be under your throttle body, right next to the thermostat housing. That one feeds into your ECU, which in turn will control your fan. There is also a relay for the fan, but I can't recall where exactly it would be if you wanted to test that; don't have my service manual with me at work today unfortunately, BUT you can find the full wiring diagrams for your car over at AustinThirdgen here. For the gauge itself, you should see a plug towards the front of your driver's side head, on the exhaust manifold side; it'll be a single wire button-style plug, and that will be what tells your temp gauge what's up.
