Cooling fan issues

Hey y’all just had a few questions on my 89 rs 305. Looks like the previous owner had the wires snipped off and put together by butt connectors and electrical tape and the fan would never kick on which I’d assume that was why, so I pulled the harness off (where it was tapped) and tested for continuity and there was nothing, does the temp need to be up for the temp sensor to read and send power to the fan or is there always continuity? I suck with the electrical aspect lol and need some help

What does that mean? Continuity requires 2 things; from HERE, to THERE. What did you actually measure?

The temp sensor doesn't "send power to the fan". There are actually 3 temp things in that motor: the temp gauge sending unit in the driver's side head (single dk grn wire), the ECM's temp sen-sore in the water outlet (yellow & black wires), and the fan switch in the pass side head (single dk grn / wht wire). Only the fan switch is involved with the fan. (as might be guessed from its name)

Any time a PO has got into the wiring with dykes and butt splices, you can be in for a rough ride. None of us out here can see what they did. We can't tell you "oh they cut the blue wire and spliced it to the yellow"; WE CAN'T SEE YOUR CAR. Only you can do that. You're gonna have to dive in and do the research.

The fan sw obviously needs to be hooked up, or the fan will never run. Might be a good idea to take a look at that. Its wire goes to the fan relay which is on the firewall near the brake booster: look for the relay with a dk grn/wht wire (duh), a tan one, a large orange, and a large black/red. The tan wire is ignition, such that the relay won't come on and send power to the fan unless the car is turned on; the orange is hard battery protected by a fusible link; and the blk/red goes to the fan motor.

So troubleshooting it is simple stuuupid eeeeezzzy. So eeeezzzzzzy in fact that I can even do it. See if there's 12V on the orange wire at all times; if not, find the break and fix it. See if there's 12V on the tan wire with the key on. See if grounding the dk grn/wht wire makes the relay click and the fan start running.

See? It's just not that hard. It's only a car; there's like A BILLION of em in the world, made by practically every country, culture, ethnicity, etc. on the planet. If all of them can figure it out, so can you.
