Can a 7730 ECM run optispark?
Do any of you know if a 7730 ECM can run optispark? It still is a distributor after all isn't it? I guess it comes down what signals the optispark uses.
Reason I ask is I just bought a 1993 LT1 w/75K, I want to run it with the 7730 thats in the car already--I'd like to avoid major wiring harness changing/vats issues/etc, I think the 7730 is plenty capable of the task.
I don't mind doing some splicing/rewiring, just don't want to re-wire half the car.
As another option, is there another distributorless system I can adapt?
Thanks guys

okay, I found a thread in which Grumpy mentions 7730 ECM CANNOT run optispark.
If so, what are the differences that prevent this?
Thanks

If I were you I'd write Tunercat and see, if there are enough flag options to turn off the trany stuff, and then just use the 8051 for running your engine.
Using the 8051 gets you a flashable thru the ALDL PCM.
Bailey Eng was working on a eDIST system for the LT1s. That allows using the LS1 coils CNP on it.

Well, since my last post did a few more searches and here is what i came up with:
From more info I found after pouring over many more searches, there would be serious interface problems that will definitely require some piece of add on hardware (and I don't know of anything that will get a 7730 to interface with optispark, probably because there's no market for it). I also found out the LT1 blocks will accept a distributor, and it will cost me less to modify the LT1 intake for a distributor ala John Millican than any other option except for using a later LT1 computer. I now am planning on going with the distributor mod--heres why:
This project will be a "set it and forget it" for the most part, any mods to it will be minor, and few and far between--so once the motor is in and the tune is correct I don't plan any drastic changes, so the rewiring and software work is hard to justify--I think I'll be happy with the 7730 in this case as it should be adequate. I know the later computers are superior, I just don't think they are right for me in this situation. Thoughts?
Second, with a distributor, I never have to worry about or pay for opti-crap. Dynotech Automotive has an upgraded optispark that supposedly is more durable, is plug and play, and repairable, but at about $600 it'll cost more than I paid for the motor. I think my plan will net me good, reliable performance at a reasonable cost.
I still welcome suggestions & comments, however.
Thanks
