Can't Get Error Code

Hi,
I've recently got myself a 88 GTA it's previous owner had a 75amp alternator installed so I changed with 105amp alternator. My problem is I can't get any error codes from the ecm (Service Engine Soon light is on). I took my car to a service they were not able to connect to ECM either (Using their scanner). They told me prom chip burned probably because of the old alternator. My Car currently starts and runs fine without any problems.

My question is can I have working ECM only by changing the prom chip or Do I need to change the whole ECM unit.

Thanks

Hard to say whether changing the MEMCAL will fix it or not. Try tapping on the ECM while the engine is running. If the engine stumbles or changes how it is running then the ECM is bad. This is a common trait of the '165s.
