Software for 3 gen?

Is there a type of SoftWare that i can buy or rent to understand whats going on in my ecm.I getting ready to have chip made 87 TA.Thanks for all your help.

They are many available devices to do this. The technical name is scantool. For purchase (not a recommendation of any one brand) there is Ease, Diacom, AutoXray, Datamaster, and a host of others.

For free there is WinALDL (160 baud data rate) and Moates (8192 data rate). If you have a TBI then get WinALDL, if you have TPI get Moates. These two programs run on a laptop (or a desk top for that matter).

Edit: another avenue is an older scantool that a garage/mechanic no longer needs. I've picked up a couple this way. A scantool can be either a piece of software to run on a PC or a self contained hand held device.
