Poll: Which dyno is better?
Hey guys, just trying to see which dyno ya'll prefer as far as the most accurate in AFR, Hp, and Tq numbers. Thanks for the info and help.
the dynojet was calibrated using
smaller, weaker, horses, resulting in
a smaller horsepower.
if you want your car to think it is
more powerful, test it on a Dynojet.
what would you rather have,
a car that tests at 220 horsepower,
or,
the same car that tests at 200 HP
.
220 is more than 200.

uhhh.............I must of missed the joke
Dyno jet is an inertia dyno, you just spin up a big weight and HP is calculated from that, it's repeatable way of getting HP numbers. Problem is that we don't spin up a big weight in the real world. So your dyno tune may not work out so well on the track.
Mustang and "Land and Sea" dyno's use either water or eddy current load cells that allow you to load the vehicle any way you like. You can even start out at redline and pull the vehicle down to idle. This gives you more realistic number, you can simulate a real drag strip run with aero loads and all. Also these types of dyno's allow you to tune part throttle, can't do that with a dynojet. Of course these types of dyno's do tend to spit out lower numbers, even though they are probably more realistic numbers.
The AFR guages used on a dyno should all work fine, just keep in mind that you can't just stick it in the tail pipe of a cat equiped car. Cats mess with AFR. If you do have cats see if you can get an extra bung welded in for dyno trips and your WB once you get one.
It al depends on what you hope to acomplish on a dyno. If you just after bragging rights, go to a dyno jet. If your wanting to use a dyno as a tool find a mustang or land and sea dyno and see if the operator knows how to use it correctly.

how much more HP does a dynojet give a car? I had my car tuned on a Mustang dyno and it pumped out 300 RWHP. the tuner said that is a good number for this dyno because it is REAL HP. I never really understood what he was saying at the time. I havent got around to running it on a dynojet to see how much more HP it shows so that is why I am asking. Most guys dont even know there is different dynos out there, I mean, didnt before I started looking around. Now I do and it is realy hard to try and explain to someone the difference in them. I tell someone that I put down 300 and they say thats it? I get kinda mad when they say that and I want higher numbers just to shut them up.

Unfortunately bench racing dyno numbers is pretty much useless. It's hard to get repeatable numbers on the same dyno let alone dyno's all over the US. I had a buddie with a 96' cobra that put down 330 on a mustang dyno and 360 on a dynojet. So 10% higher with a dynojet is about right.
What your dyno operator was saying about "real HP" is true, the mustang dyno, or any dyno that used some kind of variable load like a water brake or eddy current, loads the car more realistically. You may rev much faster ir slower on a dynojet or even have less or more load on the engine on an inertia dyno compared to what you really do on the street. This can cause you to run in a completely different area of your VE curve in your ECM. I would tune on a mustange dyno and brag on a dynojet.

also, how much is lost in the average drivetrain. I am running a T56 if it matters. this is simply for bragging rights but I have 300 RWHP on a mustang dyno so I figure 330 on a dynojet. how much at the flywheel........400?????????

I hate to keep bring up LS1's, but they are so darn consitant that it's pretty easy to compare numbers between them. I've seen anywhere between 360 and 400 hp out of crate motors, but most of these numbers were out of magazines, so take that for what it's worth.

Thanks for the replies guys....I am about to head to a dyno dynamic on Sunday and hopefully I will lay down some nice numbers.
