experiment with '89 PROM

I posted a topic a few days ago about putting a '89 PROM into an '88 non-VATS ecm. The consensus I got was that it won't easily work. I decided to get the chip anyway and after pouring through the service manual it looks like all I need to do is send a 5v signal down the wire that the ECM normally gets the VATS signal from, and unplug the cold start injector. Before anyone asks, I went with an '89 chip because I got it fairly cheap and I'm not at a point where I can tune (or afford the equipment to tune) myself. Does this sound feasible? I thought I might even be able to wire the 5v lead through a switch to act as a low-tech security system. Any help would be appreciated.
