My ’89 IROC TPI runs for about a minute and then dies. Then you have to wait for about five minutes before you try and restart it or else it won’t start. I pulled the codes and got a code 42 and 51. I am not sure how to proceed from here because I have no diagnostic equipment.

 

51 is a bad eprom
This can be a bad chip, loose chip, or bad ecm.
42 is no est signal.
Could be the module, or the ecm not seeing it.
Most manuals will tell you the basics to check.

 

I disconnected the battery to clear the codes and see if they came back. They didn't come back but the car keeps dying out.

 

Basic trouble shooting
Spark & Fuel.....
with efi you have to verify fp and injector firing.

 

I went ahead and checked the fuel pressure and it reads about 36psi. Also I cleaned the cap, rotor and checked the wires and plugs for signs of corrosion and found none. What is bothering me is that the problem is so intermittent that it maybe cause by something totally unrelated.
