How do you determine base timing ?

I know its such a general question but i just need to ask it. I know theres many things like temperature etc that affect it but how do you figure out what is a base timing curve etc in a gen 7. Im clueless how to know where or what # to start at. ive been told LT1/4s like 15 ish degrees timing and elsewhere i hear 22-27. this is for idle. Do cam specs take part in this? Any info/help/tips would be appreciated.

Base timing is the value you set the distributor at.
Idle timing is CR and Cam dependent. A bigger cam will want in the 22-25 range at idle. But will still run at 15 to 18 too.
