What do I need to get started?

I just bought a 1991 z-28. I have a speedo and tach problem that I think may be originating in the ECM (not sure though-- local GM dealer thinks that may be the case- - I have a thread in the electronics forum if you might have any thoughts on that problem). Anyway, the GM dealer says we need to hook the car up to a Tech 1 scan tool. Is there a program I can buy or download that will allow me to see and do what the Tech 1 can?
I need to learn the basics of what the scan tool or ECM software can do; any suggestions on a good place for me to look to learn the basics?
Thanks

That hardware, along with a scanner program like TunerPro will allow you to see/log aspects of your car much like a scan tool will, except with alot more features, and will likely allow you to see if your speed/rpm are jumping around ECM side like the gauges are.

thanks. I 'll check out that site. I hooked my car up to the GM tech 1 scan tool today, but I figure there must be something better out there by now.
