If the ecm is fried, will it still throw codes?

I had a problem with my vats module.( Engine would start but not run).

I burnt a new chip for it to disregard the vats module and it started but when I hit the gas, it would bog.
I reburnt 2 new chips and now it won't even start. I have fuel pressure and the plugs are wet. I have a very weak to no spark.

When I try to put a paper clip in "a" and "b" in the aldl, nothing works. Before the engine fans would turn on, but now nothing.

Also, the chip is very warm that is in the ecm, is this normal??

If the ecm was fried, would it still throw codes?

Does the SES light come on when you turn on the key?

Re: If the ecm is fried, will it still throw codes?

I am not exactly sure which ECM you have. If you car is MAF it might be a 1227165 and if it is a MAP you would have a 1227730.. You need to go to the right side passenger compartment, drop the panel. And get your ecm numbers. You can get either of these at any local junk yard dirt cheap.. Usually around $25 - $50 each. If it is a 1227730 which I think it is.. you can use just about any of these cars for a compatible match.

Corsica
Lumina
Grand-Am
Grand Prix
Sunbird Non-Turbo
Regal Non-Turbo
camaro's
firebirds

At www.gmpartsdirect.com you can buy the ECM at these prices + Shipping..

Ecm, 2.8l, 5.0l 84-92 $158.40
Ecm, 3.1l, 5.7-8l 84-92 $121.27

If it is your Prom. You can buy that at www.gmpartsdirect.com for about $60 part no# 16151348

That is depending on if it is a AUJP eprom.. You will have to pull your eprom and determine if it is a AUJP

tpiparts.net sells new remanufactured ECM for 120 bucks (if you send in your old one)
The are AC Delco made ones, so they are really fine.

GM partsdirect thats used ones right ? checked that longtime ago, and thats was why I didnt buy from there.

Re: If the ecm is fried, will it still throw codes?

If the engine cranks over then its not the VATS. There is a VATS relay for both the starter and the ECM. If the VATS system does not recognize your key, it will not run the starter nor pulse the fuel injectors.

It sounds like a bad ECM to me. If its bad, it could either turn the SES light on steady (no blink when you turn the key on), or it could flash the SES light rapidly. No it is not normal for the chip to be very warm.

When I ordered theirs, I only got brand new ones. I have ordered 3 different ones and have never had any problems. They might have fully reconditioned but you don't have to send yours to them.

So did that fix your problem?
Would the car start?
----------
Does the SES light come on when you turn on the key?
No

Does the ecm control spark?
B/c I have very weak spark at the plug, and I took the wire from the coil to the dizzy and put a spark plug in there and it was weak as well.

I did notice before this problem occured, that I could hear a electrical sound(like the one you would hear if you were beside a electrical pole) when I took the wire off the plug. Now there is nothing. I also have a msd digi 6 so I gotta check that too.

Top 3 most likely problems, in order of probability:
1) ECM fuse burned out, or ECM otherwise not receiving power
2) ECM = toast
3) Burned out SES light

When all things are functioning properly, the ECM should turn on the SES light for a few seconds, immediately after the key is turned on.

Re: If the ecm is fried, will it still throw codes?

Electronic equipment that is "FRIED" can and often does perform UNPREDICTABLY. It all depends on what MELTED together inside the ECM or one of the chips. There are parts that get uncomfortably hot when operating normally but if it is so hot you can't keep a finger on it, 9 times out of ten its bad. So yes. it can still toss out codes. They may be correct or meaningless.
The ECM mainly controls the TIME (occurence and length [dwell] ) of the spark but not the LEVEL (voltage or strength) of the spark.
Hope this helps and any poundings I get for bad advice is deserved!

Re: If the ecm is fried, will it still throw codes?

I got 2 computers from the junkyard.( the 1227730)

When I put them in my car with my chip the prime fuel pump stays on.....
WTF?
Then I tried the other one and the same thing happens, the pump stays on.

Then I tried the stock computer and the fuel pump shuts off after 10 seconds.

Now I don't know what the problem is.

Maybe I'll try the other computers and see if I have spark.

Just out of curiousity, Did you change the Eprom after the ECM swap?

I changed the prom over from my stock one. I have the apu1 from moates, so I am burning chips and I tried 2 different ones.

I'll try to burn other though.

Re: If the ecm is fried, will it still throw codes?

10 seconds seems really long. Only should run about 3 tops and then cut off with a none started engine. I'm pretty sure this is a TIMED event from ECM. Its not waiting on pressure readings to kick off. Unless of course the TIME is a fiddle factor in the ECM programming and the factor has been fiddled...:-\

Re: If the ecm is fried, will it still throw codes?

I think my ECM is going bad as well, a while back I started the car and it ran like CRAP, it almost felt like it had a miss, when I checked my eeprom in it, it had a white crispy spot in it! I threw in a new prom chip and the car ran proper. I've also had phantom problems with it having an off idle stumble and just generally running odd sometimes. I truly think it's the ECM going bad but not totally crashing. Sometimes my fuel pump will run like mad as well when I turn the key on, and sometimes it will run for several seconds after I shut the key off! I have already swapped over the fuel pump relay so I know that's not it. Tell me how this ends up turning out. OH btw, I had a BIG issue with a friends car a while back, no matter what we did to the ARAP prom the car ran like a dog, I finally got a 1986 bin and modified it for him, that woke the car up big time so you might want to try that to see if it helps.

Re: If the ecm is fried, will it still throw codes?

I also use the APU1 on my car. Have you checked your APU1 settings to ensure that the switches are in the proper location? Is Your Adapter ok? Check for Bent pins. I am pretty sure you already are using the 7730 ECM with a AUJP prom right? Have you completely removed the APU1 and just tried the prom mated directly to the ECM? I have heard of the ECM doing funny things on cars when it is bad. But it sounds like you need to eliminate all outside sources 1st. I wish I lived closer, I would love to give you a hand on this one.

Do you have the stock chip installed on the adapter?

Yes, I put the stock chip back in and it still starts but shuts off immediately.

Any other suggestions?

The prime pump runs for a couple of seconds and then shuts off. I hard wired the "run" pump and that wouldn't keep the engine going.
