With vehicles built prior to 1974 (US) and some export vehicles there isn't a catalytic converter. No cat-con, no need for closed loop. Running at stoich isn't always the best.

Re: why does some pple only run in open loop?

i like open loop cuz its abit easier to tune for me. i could run closed loop and have been doing so for awhile but there was a startup idle issue i couldnt figure out and i stopped trying.

open loop is easier to tune on motors with bigger cams with overlap that screw up the o2 sensor readings. you can tweak the o2 readings to work for alot of cases but some its just better to try open loop
