88 TBI camaro swap to 746 computer
88 TBI camaro swap to 746 computer
Hey guys,
I am building an engine which will require me to custom tune my computer. Since I have the 88 camaro TBI 305, I have the oddball 063 computer which, from what I can tell is not supported by TunerPro.
It seems that those staying with a stock computer are using the 746 computer and that this is supported by TunerPro.
Cost is a factor. If it would work, a used 746 computer, prominator and TunerPro seem to be the least expensive route for me. I am aware of EBL which seems really slick but is more expensive. The third option is Tunercat plus prominator for the 063 computer, but by the time I spend that money, I might as well just get EBL for my 063.
So my question is - what is involved in swapping a 746 computer into my 88 camaro? Would the harness in my 88 camaro (for the 063 computer) just plug straight into a 746 computer without "re-pinning"?
Assuming the 746 I find was from a 305 camaro TBI from another year (maybe 89) and it has the stock chip in it, would it run my engine (still the stock 305) for now? I would then get into the custom tuning with my upcoming engine swap.
Thanks for the help.

To go from the '8063 to the '8746 is a matter of unplugging one and plugging the other in. However, the '8746s from f-body's have VATs. So that will prevent your car from starting and running. Note that the Caprice didn't use VATs, and ran '8746s.

Thanks, RBob. That was just the info I was looking for. If I find an f-body 746, could I disable the VATS and use it in my car?
I am really tempted to just go EBL. It appears to have everything, even the cable. The motor will probably be installed in January. You may hear from me then.

Need to re-burn the chip or use a Caprice chip to eliminate VATs. It is a switch in the calibration to turn it off. Can't argue that an EBL would be the best way to go.
