Code 36?

Hey guys and gals, im getting a code 36 when i jump my diagnostic connector. I have not owned this car for long and am still getting to know it. Are there any pointers out there when dealing with this code? I have read that never replace the maf when you get this code and i have also read that you always end up replacing it. I have also heard of the ecm being the problem with this code? Find that one hard to believe but, ok. I have also read about the relays and have not checked them yet, just thought i would see if there are any pointers out there for when i get out and start dealing wit this problem. Thanks for the advise. BTW its an '88 w/ a 350.

Re: Code 36?

Isn't code 36 a burn-off failure? Usually the relay is bad.

Here is a check that you can do. Open the intake duct work to the point where you can look into the front of the MAF. Leave the MAF connected to the engine. Start the engine and let it run for a minute.

Then key-off and quickly look into the front of the MAF. The wire should glow orange. That is the burn-off cycle.

RBob.

Re: Code 36?

if you run your car for awhile when u shut it down u can listen and actually hear the burn off relay click off when it shuts off

Re: Code 36?

I have not tried the cycle yet but i did check the coil in the relays. Both coils read 56 ohms of resistance and the other polls are like they should be (normally open and normally closed). How long does the car have to run for before shutting it off to have the burn cycle to work? The schematic I have on the car is wicked tiny.. is there a good side schematic online somewhere that you know of?

Re: Code 36?

All set for now, I checked all wires on both MAF and burn off relays for resistance and power. All wires checked out good (did not check the ones going to ecm though). Unhooked battery then hooked it back up to clear codes, ran car for about 5 to 10 minutes, held both relays in my hands and had my wife shut the car off. Both relays clicked when they should have and the code did not come back. Musta been a back connection somewhere. Thanks for the info and help! I have an interior q now if you want to answer it but i will post in in that forum.
