88 Firebird ECM/PROM PROBLEM!!!
88 Firebird ECM/PROM PROBLEM!!!
Hey everyone, I'm new to 3rd Gen, and I'm not a prom beggar....I just have a severe problem that doesn't seem to have an easy answer as far as I have been searching. The problem is as follows:
SOMEHOW, my ground strap came loose on my 88 firebird, shorted the alt, the ecm and a couple of other things, everything has been replaced, including the ecm, EXCEPT when the ecm was returned for the core charge, a less than mechanically inclined friend returned it and DID NOT TAKE THE PROMS OUT OF THE OLD ECM FOR INSTALLATION INTO THE NEW ECM!!!!! That is my problem...I have thus replaced the proms in the new ecm with that out of a so called compatible model, the 86 and 87 firebird. (mine is 2.8L MPFI automatic, fed emis, not cali)and yet the car cant even get out of its own way lmao, its VERY VERY doggy, no snap at all.......i cant drive!!! =(
So if anyone knows of anything that will help me put this car back on the road, then please tell me cuz I am at a total loss.
(I need BOTH chips just to be clear)
Thanks!!!

Re: 88 Firebird ECM/PROM PROBLEM!!!
Look in the tech article for programming chips and find the link to the broadcast code listing. You will have to find the broadcast code (usually 4 digits like AXYP) for your year and motor and search the boards or boneyards for your particular broadcast code prom. The only way you will know if the prom is causing your problem is by swapping back in your original prom and seeing the difference in performance.
