Best tuning option for MAF

I have a 92 firebird and I plan on following the tbi budget build, except I plan on switching to tpi. I have a complete tpi setup. It is from an 88' so it used MAF. I have ported the pentium and I plan on getting an air foil, the dent removal ***** for the runners, a vortec tpi intake and the diy cold air for firebirds found in the tech articles..hoping to get about 5,500-6000 rpm if that's possible without aftermarket runners.. but I don't know which option to choose when looking at tuning.. Iv'e read about chip burning, EBL, the Prominator, and now Megasquirt. It looks to me like Megasquirt is the better option for me because I can throw out my MAF, but if there is a cheaper and/or better method for me please suggest. I want some advice.

Thanks for all of your help!

Re: Best tuning option for MAF

The easiest and what I feel is the best way to go is the EBL Flash system. Note that I created the EBL, just so that is known up front.

With it currently being a TBI car the only wiring harness changes are for the TPI set up. This would be to change the two injector connectors for eight port style connectors. Place four in parallel in place of each TBI injector connector. Which connector going to which injector doesn't matter, it is a batch fire system.

Then extend and possibly change the TPS & IAC connectors to reach the TB. The IAT/MAT connector should be the same. Even so it is better to change the MAT to an IAT sensor (bird cage style) and place it in the area of the air cleaner.

While installing the TPI and making the wiring changes send your TBI ECM in to have the EBL Flash installed along with the optional Port Mod. Then when you get it back just plug it in, start the engine, set the timing, and do some VE Learns.

There is lots of tuning info and help on the DIY_PROM board here at TGO.

The only problem with that is that have the whole setup, and I would feel like I just waisted money if I didn't use the harness or ecu

OK, at the same time your original post is a little confusing. Are you keeping the MAF, or tossing it? If you go with the EBL it will be a speed density system. This uses the current MAP sensor.

Can sell the '7165 ECM and harness to re-coup some of the costs of the updated ECM.

There is a distinct difference between going with something such as the Prominator, Ostrich, or a Burn2 and some chips, versus an EBL Flash system. It is that the EBL is a complete package. Where a Prominator or Ostrich just replaces the chip. You still need to piece together an ALDL cable, data logging software, ECU/XDF file, ADS file and so on.

With the EBL Flash the only extra is TunerPro, which is free directly from Mark's site (just download it). With the EBL the cable, data logging/playback/analysis/VE-Learn software (the WUD), ECU/XDF, base calibrations, and doc's are all included.

This is exactly what I did. Not hard at all,EBL plugs directly into your TBI harness under your dash. RBob pointed out the only other wiring changes that's needed. Works great! Dean. P.S. it is also, I think the less expensive of the options that you listed.

Yea re selling is probably the best thing to do. hopefully someone needs an 165 ecm, harness and MAF sensor, I researched the other things you mentioned, and the EBL does sound like the best deal. When I went to your sight the first time, I knew it would be easy to install for a tbi car but i didn't know how it would be on tpi. Now I see just how easy it is.
