I have a 1984 Camaro with a stock 305 (had to take out the 350 I had cause of leakage in the engine). Anyway the problem i had was that recently the check engine light came on and would stay on. I checked out all the sensors in case one of them was wrong but all of them are working. Then when i checked out the ECM i found out that it is not working anymore. My question is that i saw one in thirdgen ranch that was for sell but the thing is that the numbers are different. My number on my ECM ends in 6455 but the one they have for sell ends in 6025.
I was wondering if i buy the ECM with a different number would it affect my car?
Also the chip that it has inside the ECM, what is that for?

 

It is best to replace the ECM with the same service number.

The chip (PROM) holds the calibration and some code. The calibration parameters are defined by the engine and how the GM tuning folks set it up.

What if i could not find one that has the same service number?

 

I found a ECM that is for sale but before i buy it. Does anyone know how to make sure the ECM works properly, since the person that is selling it doesn't no much about it and is selling it as is. I wouldn't want to be it if the ECM is already messed up.

Can't really check it out unless it can be plugged in and tried. Can pop the cover off and see if any drivers are fried. But other then that it's either a vehicle is needed or some sort of ECM test bench.

An ECM is a computer with a bunch of I/O and special chips.
