custom chip with hypertech piggy backed

Ok so i finally got my motor in and running..I had a custom chip made from Ed Wright..Hes been burning chips for tpi cars for 20 plus years..My question is this ,the PO pulled the stock chip and replaced it with a hypertech..Now the car does not like to idle when its cold..A problem that existed before the motor swap..But worse now...Is it a bad idea to piggyback a hypertech chip, should i find a stock one to plug onto the adapter..Can i run the car with no stock chip installed to see if its driveable ? Its an 89 Maf car..Motor runs great when warmed up but when its cold it stumbles and stalls ..No engine codes either..Any advice?
Thanks

Re: custom chip with hypertech piggy backed

Can only run one chip, it will be either the Ed Wright chip or the Hypertech. Trying to run both at the same time will result is a fast flashing SES light.

At this point use the one that runs the engine the best. Then either get into tuning or find someone to tune it for you.

Re: custom chip with hypertech piggy backed

Im a little confused here..I spoke with Ed the other day and he directed me to piggyback the chip..When i did not piggyback the chip i got a code 43.. I sam not sure what adapter he is using but it plugs into my factory prom spot then it has like 14 pins to the side where you plug your factory chip onto that..

Re: custom chip with hypertech piggy backed

That would be the MEMCAL that is plugged onto an adapter to bypass the stock PROM, and use the new tune.

The only thing it does is retain the knock filter and LHM NETRES. The fact that the PROM is programmed by Hypertech is inconsequential.

Re: custom chip with hypertech piggy backed

No, don't run it without the MEMCAL attached to the adapter, that will cause a rough idle in itself.

Like I said before, the actual PROM attached to the MEMCAL isn't even in the loop, when the MEMCAL is plugged onto the side of the adapter, the Hypertech PROM is then completely bypassed.
