Why not?
I will shortly be swapping my TPI 305 for a stealthram 355 and obviously going to be needing a new tune. Coincidentaly to my delight I found that Holly EFI has already designed a tune for thier commander 950 software with a motor combination very close to what I am building. Same cam, injectors, cubic inches, etc. The only difference mechanically is they are using thier own 20 degree heads and I am using Sportsman II's.
I purchased last year an autoprom from craig moates and some misc. chip burning and emulating pieces. all in all cost me roughly $500. Unfortunatly I still have very little idea on how to effectively decipher my data and tune on my own. I was wondering since my engine was similar if I could borrow Holly's numbers and just burn a chip and plug it in. I think it would be a great place to start and might hopefully eliminate a lot of trial and error. What do you guys think? What's first?
Here are some details:
Mpi3008 Base Map For 355 small block Chevy, 30 lb/hr injectors, StealthRam intake, 58mm throttle body, 20 degree Holley heads, Lunati 30142 cam (235/245 @ .050, .507/.534, 112 LC), 9.5:1 compression, 43 PSI fuel pressure, 418 HP @ 5500 RPM, 422 ft/lbs @ 4700 RPM.
Me- 350 4-bolt .040 over
forged flat-tops w/ 4 valve reliefs
stock crank
World Sportman II heads
62cc chambers
30lb/hr injectors
Lunati hyd. flat tap cam 30142
165 ECM and MAF

Is this an easy way to get a tune?
Do I need the commander software to even make this translation possible?
Re: Why not?
Holley ECM is not going to have all the other tables and qualafers and adders of stock ecm, so I doubt there one table would be correct. If you could open their maps you could get an idea or percent changed to use, spark too. Still just a start.
You got all you need to tune, learn it! Not hard, some math invlolved, TunerPro does most, exel spreadsheets do it too.
Very rewarding and also addicting! We are starting a 12 step program to help those afflicted!
