ALDL usb cable and winaldl/tunerpro

Ok, having a hard time doing much of a search on this, so I'll just ask. I recently bought an ALDL to usb cable, and an old laptop to scan my 88. I'm using winaldl and tunerpro r/t because those seem to be the two most popular programs.

In tunerpro, I have the correct datastream and xdf files loaded for my lb8. BTW, drivers etc have been installed correctly, and everything is running off of correct COM port. In tunerpro, I can connect to the ALDL, and it detects my hardware, but I see no data coming in anywhere. Emulation option is grayed out, and it says "Not Ready" in the programs status bar.

In winaldl, I use both the 85 2.8 mpfi setting and the 1227170 ecm settings (I read on another post on here that my 1227302 was identical to the 7170) and I get data coming in when I key on, however I only get the first 6 lines...MW2 through MPH. I cannot get input on any other line below those. Also, I'm not sure if this is relevant since this is my first time doing this, but the text box to the left of the config button flashes red numbers, usually 1, 6, or 9 as it's reading data.

I have NOT used the 10k resistor on the cable, as I've read it shouldn't be needed for me, and changes how the car runs. I'm assuming the cable is good, since I AM reading data on the laptop. I'm wondering if I can get some ideas of things to try, since I am so unfamiliar with these programs.

Thank you in advance.

The "Detect emulation hardware" button in Tuner Pro RT, is for just that, emulation hardware, and should not be detecting any sort of ALDL cable.

What ALDL cable do you have?

Have you set up the com ports in Tuner Pro RT?

are you sure the com ports are on the same setting in Tuner Pro as well as settings for com port in the laptop itself?

Yea, I just read about the emulation thing. Yes, COM ports are setup and same all around the table. I may try switching to COM 4 as that has done it for some people. I'm using this cable... http://www.aldlcable.com/sc/details.asp?item=aldlobd1u

Re: ALDL usb cable and winaldl/tunerpro

I got tunerpro working by changing it to COM 4. However, being as I don't know the norms of what the data looks like, I have a question. In the malfunction section under ALDL flags, I'm getting constant errors that change each sample. Also, I'm not getting some readings, some are reading sometimes and not others (like tps voltage) and others seem way outta spec. My ECM has been suspected by me for a while to possible be bad. Is this confirmation? Or am I reading something wrong...maybe settings in tuberpro are off. I get things like my cts reading 85*F when it's at op temp.

I would appreciate a little point in the right direction. Thank you.

Ground faults can cause crazy random data, and ECM mis-behavior.

Re: ALDL usb cable and winaldl/tunerpro

I'm using the correct definition from the tunerpro Site. Is there a good way to test for ground faults? Nearly everything I've touched on the car I've checked the ground on.... Never seen any problems

Re: ALDL usb cable and winaldl/tunerpro

I checked my ecm grounds to the back of the head. They're both 0.5 ohms. Connections there and grounding strap are good. Using the a20 stream definition for the lb8 from the tunerpro site.

WinAldl still doesn't read more than 6 lines even after port change. Tunerpro I believe is giving weird readings. Saying I'm driving when I'm not (engine rpm and vehicle speed) but sometimes it seems info is correct. Like every 3rd or 4th update. I need to get it setup so I can at least get accurate readings from a couple sensors, or establish if my ecu is bad.

All help appreciated.

Ok, just so you guys can see what kinda info I'm getting.

Here is a link to my Google Docs to an export from TunerPro of the car keyed on, but not running: http://goo.gl/ELldu

Re: ALDL usb cable and winaldl/tunerpro

I finally got what looks like a reliable log this time. I updated to TunerPro R/T v5 and used the 10k resistor. This was the only way I could get the cable to connect, and keep a constant stream coming in. In the comments of the datastream definition I'm using, it says to use it, however I have read multiple times that using it causes the ECM to run the car different. If I could get some input on this for my specific application, I would be grateful. TunerPro R/T v5, the cable I linked above, a 7302 ECM on an 88 2.8L.

Edit: If you want to see the new data I logged, you can view it here: http://goo.gl/yhb8N
