EBL error message

This is my first time using EBL and I'm attempting to put my initial tune on the motor I just built. I purchased the ready to install version and simply plugged it in. When I plug in the serial port to the laptop and turn the ignition on nothing happens. The comm port says it's open but the 'pin wheel' doesn't spin nor does the TPS % read as is described in Rbobs installation guide. Furthermore, when I try to program my tune in, I get the following message:

RX Timeout 1
TxS1Info Failed

-Flashing Failed-

What does this error message mean? Did I miss a ground or something somewhere? Could it be the laptop I'm using (it is pretty ancient)? I'm just not sure why it doesn't even seem to read the ECM at all. Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys.

Re: EBL error message

With the pin wheel not spinning you won't be able to flash either. You may have chosen an internal modem port not the serial port. Try com 1, 2, & 3 and see if the spinner goes.

Re: EBL error message

I think that was the issue. The laptop I'm using is literally almost 10 years old and doesn't have a serial port. I was just using the modem cable plugged into the modem port thinking it would be the same thing. Guess I'll be buying a third hard drive for my other laptop so I can tune this thing. Thanks, Rbob. You're a big help as always.

Re: EBL error message

The older laptops are the ones that usually have a serial port. Looks like this:

Re: EBL error message

I have two serial to USB adapters. Both work flawlessly. One Radio Shack and the other from a local computers sales/service store.

Enjoy the EBL. You made a wise investment.

Yeah the laptop I've been using doesn't have one and my other one has the female end so I just went and bought a serial to USB adapter.

Re: EBL error message

Ok I bought one of Rbob's usb adapters and was able to get all the right drivers and settings installed and load my tune on Thursday with no issues. Today I wanted to start the car for the first time and see how it runs. But when I turn the ignition on, the ecm isn't responding. Literally nothing has changed on the laptop or the ebl ecm since I loaded the tune. I have no clue what the issue is here. Any ideas?

EDIT: Found the problem. Apparently one of the battery terminals had somehow come loose so the ecm and such wouldn't read but the lights and radio were on.

Key on engine off the CE light should blink and go steady on. did this happen?

If no the bin was not properly loaded.

Re: EBL error message

Yeah when I was having the issue the SES light wasn't coming on the fuel pump wasn't priming. When I tried turning the motor over everything went dead so that's how I knew it was a loose connection somewhere. Everything is working properly now.
