No Spark on 85 TA
No Spark on 85 TA
Hi, was wondering if anyone can help out? I have an 85 TA which was running fine when I put it in storage last fall. Went to take it out this spring and now I have no spark, but cranks over great. I replaced the coil, cap and rotor and still no spark. The check engine light does not come on anymore either so I can't pull codes. ANY IDEAS???

Re: No Spark on 85 TA
There is an inline fuse under the hood near the battery. Usually a 20A fuse. It provides power to the ECM and to the fuel pump. This may be the cause of no SES light.
As for no spark, the ICM is a prime suspect, with the pickup coil being a secondary suspect.

It was the ICM...Thanks for the direction

Hey Rob, You seem to have a good knowlege of these TPI's and would like your thoughts. I have a 89 TA with a 383 stroker. Bought a year ago and it ran great. Now my boy changed the cap and rotor and it would not even start. It appeared the wires were all off one point. I rotated them one pin and it fired right up. However ever since then it runs a little rough at idle, sometimes dies. If you mash on the throttle it will still smoke the tires at will. But anytime you slowly apply throttle it dogs way down missing terrible until you quit moving the throttle then it takes off again running great? I have changed the TPS, MAF, ICM, MAT, Temp sensor, with no fix. I do not remember the code number however it was losing spark. It has a mallory distributer and ACCEL super burn coil. But like I said it runs well except when physically moving the throttle. Any ideas??? What is left besides a bad ECM. Also if I decide to go with a new ECM can I take the EPROM (or whatever the chip is called) out of my old one and plug it into the replacement. I know the VSS, and EGR was taken out before my time. Any advise would be helpful. I miss my car and once winter comes the shed will be locked for months. The car hates water unless it is given a bath. Thanks

I have an 87 Z-28 with no spark also. The ICM checked out good when I had it checked but my problem is that I have no power to the coil and am wondering why that could be. any help would be appreciated. All fuses are good to my knowledge and the fuel pump is bad.

Re: No Spark on 85 TA
the pink wire should have battery voltage with the key on. I'll consult my wiring diag for a better answer

Re: No Spark on 85 TA
Tinbender59 I have checked every wire and have no power at all with the key on or off. I even checked it with the engine cranking. I have been slowly working on this car for over a year and am ready to just get it running and out of the garage. also is there any way that a bad neutral safety switch could cause this problem. we had to install a new trans and maybe something didn't get hooked up right.

lets do some basic troubleshooting, disconnect the battery, then find your Ignition switch, "lower stearing colum" pull the plug from it, then you need to find the pink wires going to it. connect a long piece of wire to each one. one at a time, run the other end of this long wire out of the door to under the hood. connect it to one of your meter leads, connect the other meter lead to the pink wire on your distributor. checking continuity. let me know what you find
