Simple Primer on ECM reprogramming?
Simple Primer on ECM reprogramming?
hi all;
Pretty new to this forum but it looks like a good one; lots of knowledge - maybe too much in some cases?!?
I've looked thru stickies and posts and numerous forums - all I can find, in fact. I've spent days on my laptop searching and taking notes to try to find a 'primer' on what you (me) ACTUALLY has to do/buy/get to reprogram an ECM.
I've had responses from various sites; and I have searched and sent notes to Code 59, TunerCat, TunerPro, Craig Moates and others, and have had recommendations to buy about $600 worth of hardware (cables, adapters, burners, scanners, monitors etc) before even getting (buying, again) any software!
So what I am hoping to find is a link/site/source that will (fairly) clearly outline what a person really has to have - hardware and software - to reprogram an OBD1 ECM (likely the GM 7730) to my new needs. Does anyone know of an ECM kindergarten site?
I know how to follow pinout diagrams and re-wire ECMs including moving pins in the connectors to 'find' proper inputs/outputs etc on the ECM to suit a different motor. What I haven't any experience with is reflashing an ECM....
Thanks in advance to any pointers; all info is helpful.
Edit: the 'too much knowledge' comment is reference to the 'advanced language/terminology' that most people jump to in threads; I need an earlier starting point..

I also have a Moates setup that I purchased a few years ago that I would let go for $300. This has the cables with the burner and some spare EPROMs.

I hope this gets you started in the right direction.

Re: Simple Primer on ECM reprogramming?
to simply "get started" you only need
a burner
an ALDL cable(usb is easiest)
Laptop with software
Prom adapter for your specific ECM
and some blank chips
I bought everything above for under $200, some used, some new from Moates
there are also all in one options available

Re: Simple Primer on ECM reprogramming?
Stickies above are quite good.
Intro to tuning part 1 and 2 is on the dynamicefi.com site. It uses TunerPro and helps you understand TP. Part 2 is more on the tuning the engine/sensors etc. If you like what you read you may want to consider the EBL-ECU. It uses a GM donor ECU.
